Jazz at the Lobero welcomes legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd and his New Quartet, featuring pianist Jason Moran, bassist Reuben Rogers, and drummer Eric Harland. The quartet brings together three stellar representatives of jazz’s younger generation with the venerable artist Charles Lloyd. Lloyd’s distinctive tone is defined by a lifetime of spiritual questing and creative collaborations with artists and musical philosophies from around the world. His concerts and recordings are events of pristine beauty and elegance, full of intensely felt emotion and passion that touches deep inside the heart.
“Follow the career of Charles Lloyd, who just turned 70, and you see a map of great jazz across half a century. His band … is at a high, and his shows full of momentum and intuition, perfectly represent the idea that the best jazz needs to be experienced live”. – Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

Born in Havana in 1930, raised on the rich sounds of North, Central and South American jazz and dance music, and seasoned by the often volatile political and social forces that have shaped her homeland over the past half-century, Omara Portuondo has ascended to iconic status around the world. Her career reached a new pinnacle in the late ’90s via her impassioned performances on the Grammy-winning 1997 recording, Buena Vista Social Club Presents Omara Portuondo. Propelled by this success, she spent the past decade piling up awards and accolades from either side of the equator. “It is the simple and profound things – life, love – that inspire me most,” she says. “Singing energizes me, and with this energy, I can introduce my culture and my roots to the world. Music is a part of nature, and a huge part of my life.” Omara will bring her rich, soulful brand of jazz and balladry, with the splendid Cuban pianist Roberto Fonseca as opener, to the Lobero this fall.

Bill Frisell has established himself as one of the most sought-after guitar voices in contemporary music. The breadth of his performance and recording situations is a testament not only to his singular guitar conception, but his musical versatility as well. Much has been said of the uncategorizable nature of Frisell’s music and the seamlessness with which his bands have navigated such a variety of styles. He’s an innovative player who has been constructing a beautiful bridge between the worlds of instrumental jazz and country for years.
“Frisell is a revered figure among musicians – like Miles Davis and few others, his signature is built from pure sound and inflection; an anti-technique that is instantly identifiable.” – The Philadelphia Inquirer
For over 30 years, the cornerstone of John Scofield’s music has been found in The John Scofield Trio. The group is comprised of old friends and longtime musical partners, including bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Bill Stewart – three great musicians hitting their stride through invention, playing tight jazz standard and saucy original compositions. Their music embodies the spirit that has kept jazz vigorous and visceral since its birth. One of the “big three” of current jazz guitarists (along with Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell), Scofield’s influence has been ever-present for close to three decades. Possessor of a very distinctive rock-oriented sound that utilizes overdrive, Scofield is a masterful jazz improviser whose music generally falls somewhere between post-bop, fusion, and soul jazz.
“Scofield's muse has evolved from guitar standards to post-bop to fusion and back again. (He wears) a gilded robe as the modern messiah of Terminator jazz." – Ken Micaleff, Downbeat Magazine

It is not an overstatement to say that modern jazz has been shaped by the music of five-time Grammy Award winner and NEA Jazz Master McCoy Tyner. Hailed globally as a master pianist, jazz stylist and one of the best living composers of the genre, Tyner, from his days as a groundbreaker with the classic John Coltrane Quartet to his current status as a living jazz icon, has a 50-plus year history of music performance. McCoy Tyner nurtures each facet of his piano art with gusto, uncompromising integrity and boundless energy. He views music and piano as his life purpose, and performing is his passion. Doubling up with McCoy Tyner will be talented rising jazz stars from the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet.
“McCoy Tyner’s blues-based piano style, replete with sophisticated chords and an explosively percussive left hand has transcended conventional styles to become one of the most identifiable sounds in improvised music. His harmonic contributions and dramatic rhythmic devices form the vocabulary of a majority of jazz pianists.” – AllAboutJazz.com
